Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Celebrates Five-Million Exports Milestone
BANGKOK – December 9, 2022: Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co., Ltd. celebrated its five-million exports milestone with a ceremony at its Laem Chabang Cruise Center, Terminal A1, Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province. The achievement underlines the company’s significant role as a production hub for regional and global operations.
Mr. Eiichi Koito, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said during the celebration ceremony, “Thailand’s strategic status as an automotive hub helped drive Mitsubishi Motors Thailand to become the hub for its regional and international operations. In Thailand, we have three assembly plants, one engine factory, one paint factory, along with the first proving ground outside Japan to strengthen research and development (R&D), and an Education Academy as a training facility for employees and dealers nationwide. Our facilities at Laem Chabang are the biggest manufacturing center outside Japan, with exports going to more than 120 countries all over the world. Our entire value chain hires more than 400,000 positions in total, creating a number of job opportunities and contributes to building the Thai auto industry, the economy and infrastructure.”
“Moving forward, we remain committed to continue investing for further growth along with supporting Thailand’s moves towards the carbon-neutral era. We have investment plans for new model development, production capacity enhancement, as well as facilities upgrading with solar power and renewable energy. As we continue to expand our growth in Thailand, we will also focus on ensuring our operations leave sustainable impacts for the Thai society. This includes the implementation of carbon-reduction projects around the country and active participation in leading the drive towards a more sustainable future via electrification. We have a clear and consistent direction towards a carbon-neutral society,” added Mr. Koito.
Joining the celebration ceremony is H.E. Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Minister of Industry who congratulated Mitsubishi Motors Thailand on the success and expressed appreciation for the collaborative relationship between the automaker and the Thai government.
“As one of the biggest automakers and exporters in Thailand, the achievement of Mitsubishi Motors Thailand is also a success to Thailand and its people, the auto industry and economy as a whole. As the auto industry grows, I would like to thank Mitsubishi Motors Thailand for the commitment to grow alongside the development of Thailand,” added H.E. Mr. Suriya.
After starting its operations in Thailand in 1961, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand began local production in 1992 when Laem Chabang Plant 1 commenced operations, followed by Laem Chabang Plant 2 in 1996 and Laem Chabang Plant 3 in 2007. This allowed the company to produce world-class cars and one-ton pickup trucks for domestic and export markets. The Laem Chabang facilities currently manufacture five models—Mitsubishi Triton, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Mitsubishi Mirage, Mitsubishi Attrage and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
For over 61 years, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand is committed to contribute to the development and growth of Thailand through seven major pillars. They include investment, environment, technology transfer, social contribution, human resources development, employment and export. In fact, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand is the first automaker to export Thai-made vehicles, when it exported a Mitsubishi Lancer Champ to Canada in 1988. Mitsubishi Motors Thailand achieved one million exports in 2007. The automaker marked its second-million, third-million and fourth-million exports in 2013, 2016 and 2019 respectively.
Mitsubishi Motors Thailand’s facilities at Laem Chabang are currently the biggest manufacturing center outside Japan, capable of producing more than 400,000 vehicles a year with exports going to more than 120 countries all over the world. From 2019 to October 2022, Australia has become the largest export market, followed by Germany, the U.S., Mexico, Philippines, U.A.E., Indonesia, Vietnam, Chile and Saudi Arabia. The Mitsubishi Triton is the most exported model, accounting for over 50 percent of exports. This is followed by the Mitsubishi Mirage, Mitsubishi Attrage and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. The landmark model for its 5th million export celebration is the “MITSUBISHI TRITON.”
The latest export milestone came after Mitsubishi Motors Thailand opened a world-class paint factory in early 2022. Designed to offer best-quality automotive paintwork through innovative and environment-friendly technologies, the paint factory demonstrates Mitsubishi Motors Thailand’s continued commitment to enhance its production quality and capacity to fulfill the increasing demands in the country and other markets.
